Andrew Mele

From 1999 through 2005, Andrew Mele was Executive Director of Clearwater, where he was instrumental in the EPA’s 2002 Record of Decision requiring General Electric to remove PCB contamination from the upper Hudson River and was actively involved in a court judgment against Entergy that requires compliance with the Clean Water Act in the cooling systems at Indian Point. As Clearwater’s Environmental Director from 1994 through 1998, he worked on a variety of water quality issues, including some important early steps in the development of Hudson River Park.

Prior to his environmental work, Mele designed and built wooden boats. He held a national speedsailing title in 1986 in a 36-foot sailing catamaran and a world’s record for solar-powered boat voyages in 1992. He is the author of Polluting for Pleasure, a study of the magnitude of oil and gasoline pollution in America’s waterways. He now writes novels and lives in Woodstock, New York.

Andrew Mele has a BA and MS Environmental Science from Bard College.
