Hudson River Park Neighborhood District
Since 1999, Friends of Hudson River Park has built a broad constituency for the Park and has led the successful effort to obtain hundreds of millions in public funding needed to complete and enrich Hudson River Park. Paramount among our concerns is that the Park is never allowed to fall into disrepair and has adequate funding to be maintained as a pristine public amenity, well-connected to surrounding neighborhoods.
To help fulfill our mission of a finished and perpetually maintained Park, Friends is working with a
broad coalition of Park neighbors to identify and secure a steady source of financing for the long-term maintenance of the Park and to enhance its connections to nearby communities.
The Hudson River Park Neighborhood Improvement District Steering Committee is developing a plan for the creation of a Neighborhood Improvement District, which can provide the stable, predictable source needed for long-term Park financing. Improvement District funds can also be used to enhance the Park’s surrounding neighborhoods - - investments not currently permitted by the
Hudson River Park Act, without separately raised funds .
To design an equitable and effective public-private improvement district, the Committee has surveyed residents, businesses and property owners in the
area, to identify the most pressing needs in the Park neighborhood. A Hudson River Park Improvement District can respond to these needs and provide the long-term, steady funding needed to realize the original vision of a Park that comes across the road to meet its neighbors at home.
