Pier 49 at Bank Street is the location for New York City's first AIDS memorial.  A forty-two foot long curved black stone bench set on top of a path within a knoll of pine trees, the monument contains the inscription "I can sail without wind, I can row without oars, but I cannot part from my friend without tears."  From the memorial, a visitor can look out at the pilings where the pier used to be, a memory, for some, of loss.
