The Greenwich Village section of the Park offers extraordinary views of the Hudson and also gives you the opportunity to explore the significant history of this area:

  • Newgate Prison, the first New York State prison, was built here in 1797.
  • In 1804, Alexander Hamilton was rowed from Weehawken, New Jersey to a Christopher Street pier after he was mortally wounded in his infamous duel with Aaron Burr.
  • And in 1807, Robert Fulton’s steamship Clermont launched its maiden voyage from a pier then located here. Defying all expectations, “Fulton’s Folly” cruised upriver at four miles an hour to reach Albany thirty-two hours later, making it the world’s first practical steamboat.
