Hudson River Park Estuarine Sanctuary

When completed, Hudson River Park will connect us to more than 400 acres of the Hudson River, notable as an estuary—a place where the fresh water from the land meets the salt water from the ocean—that has been designated as the Hudson River Park Estuarine Sanctuary and protected by New York State law. This designation, acknowledging the importance of the sanctuary as an official New York State Significant Coastal Fist and Wildlife Habitat, allows the river and its shoreline to be preserved as a coastal fish and wildlife habitat. Plans for the completed Park include the creation of an estuary museum and other opportunities to educate communities about this precious environment.
Friends works to support the preservation of this shoreline habitat and also advocates for increased public access to the River for recreational activities. We envision a completed Park that entices people to leave the shoreline and experience kayaking, boating, fishing, and sightseeing while on the water.
