Arthur E. Imperatore Jr.
has a long and admirable tradition of engagement with the Hudson River waterfront as a Founding Director and current Board member of Friends. He plays an equally active role in his professional life as President and CEO of ARCORP Properties, which includes NY Waterway, the ferry service that assisted in the January 15, 2009 rescue of passengers aboard the US Airways jet that landed in the Hudson River within the footprint of Hudson River Park. Well-trained in overboard rescue techniques, the crew was responsible for rescuing 142 out of 155 passengers and, for its heroic efforts, was officially honored by the Secretary of Homeland Security and the Commandant of the Coast Guard. In a ceremony aboard the Intrepid, the crew was also honored by the United Sates Secretary of the Transportation.
“I grew up along the Hudson River in New Jersey and first experienced its shore line as an industrial wasteland,” says Imperatore. “I am delighted to know that, with Hudson River Park heading towards completion, something bold and visionary is underway that will provide a whole new and pleasurable experience for the next generation.”

Park Progress
Construction Update
Visit Hudson River Park’s recently opened Pier 64 at 24th Street, just north of Chelsea Piers. While enjoying the views, you can also check out the ongoing construction of Piers 62 and 63 (pictured above). This section, scheduled to open in Spring 2010, includes plans for a skate park, carousel, gardens, and an open three-acre lawn bowl. Other construction currently underway in the Tribeca segment is scheduled for completion in Fall 2010. Read more about what remains to be done to complete the Park.
Funding Update
Friends was a leader in shaping the legislative dialogue this year about State funding to complete Park construction projects already underway on Tribeca’s Pier 25 and 26, and upland areas from Chambers to North Moore Street. As a result of our efforts, the 2010 state budget beginning April 1 included $6 million for these projects, which was an increase from the original December proposal. This allocation, along with a $7 million allocation from New York City, will allow Park construction to continue uninterrupted as planned. The completed Pier 25 will include a miniature golf course, playground, volleyball courts, and locations for historic boats. Pier 26 when it first opens will feature a boathouse for non-motorized boats, and a café. Future plans for Pier 26 also include an estuarium.

Discover The Park
Visit Private Passage, the first permanent public sculpture commissioned as part of Hudson River Park, on display in Clinton Cove. A site-specific installation by artist Malcolm Cochran, Private Passage is a 30 foot long, 8’6” diameter wine bottle resting on its side that is an interpretation of a stateroom based loosely on photographs of the Queen Mary. Private Passage was created in partnership with the Percent for Art program, administered through the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Featured Photo
Check out this photo of the whimsical carved bird sculptures on the pilings at Pier 34 (Canal and Spring Streets) in the Park’s Tribeca section. It was taken by Liz Hadfield, a Friends’ staff member who frequently visits the Park with camera in hand. We encourage you to do the same and to share your most engaging Park photos with us. For each newsletter, we will select a photo that best captures some aspect of the Park and its community of users. If you don’t see your photos here, look for them in the Photo Gallery section of our website. Send your photos to photos@fohrp.org.
